College Football Pick: Nebraska vs. Penn State
NCAA Football Betting Favorite: Nebraska -3.5
The past week has been an extremely long one for Penn State fans and the entire community in State College. A 23 page grand jury report was released that describes horrific crimes allegedly committed by long-time Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. As more news has broken in the past week, it continues to look worse and worse for Penn State. It seems many people at the University had a chance to stop these alleged crimes and they didn’t step up. Joe Paterno has now taken the fall after the trustees voted him out on Wednesday night. The Penn State football program is in shock right now. Can the team pull it together and pick up a big win over Nebraska this Saturday? Emotions will be running extremely high this Saturday in Happy Valley.
Nebraska is coming off a very disappointing home loss to Northwestern. The Cornhuskers had a chance to control their own destiny in the Big Ten Legends Division, but they blew it last weekend. The team still has a chance at the title, but they must get back on track right away. Nebraska’s offense revolves around the running game. Taylor Martinez and Rex Burkhead give the team two great runners in the backfield at all times. Martinez still needs to develop as a passer, but he can run as well as just about any quarterback in the country. Burkhead is a tough runner who fights for every yard.
Nebraska’s defense has been disappointing this year. This unit was expected to be dominant, but they have struggled quite a bit against the run. Jared Crick, the team’s best defensive lineman, is out for the season with an injury. Nebraska will need to stop the run this weekend, so it will be a good test for this defense.
The Nittany Lions enter this pivotal Big Ten matchup with a 8-1 record. It has been the defense that has led the way for Penn State all season. How good this unit been? Opponents have been held to ten points or less in six of the team’s nine games this year. The Nittany Lions rank eighth in the nation in total defense. D’Antonn Lynn and Nick Sukay are the leaders of a strong secondary.
Matt McGloin has gotten most of the playing time at quarterback of late. McGloin has shown the ability to move the offense more consistently than Robert Bolden has. Derek Moye is the team’s most talented offensive player. Moye has missed several games due to injury, but he should be ready to go for this one. Moye is probably the most talented receiver in the Big Ten. Penn State’s offense relies heavily on the running game. Silas Redd is the leading rusher for the Nittany Lions, and he has already topped the 1,000 yard mark for the season.
It’s difficult to say what all the emotions will do to the Nittany Lions. I think the spread is a very tough call. I do like both defenses to slow down the opposition. Look for a low scoring game.
