No Joe Paterno and no Jim Tressel on the sidelines makes this matchup seem a little different, but it is still Penn State vs. Ohio State. Both Paterno and Tressel were fired in the past year after letting down their school and causing each program to be left with a major black eye. Buckeyes fans are looking ahead to who their next coach will be, while Penn State is still trying to find their footing after a rough last two weeks. Which team can come up with a win this Saturday?

Penn State came out extremely flat in last week’s loss to Nebraska. The players seemed listless in the first half, and a late comeback fell just a bit short. Matt McGloin appears to have solidified his spot as the team’s starting quarterback. The Nittany Lions offense has been less than stellar of late, but McGloin seems to give the team its best chance to win. Silas Redd has a minor shoulder injury, but he is expected to play this week. Redd leads the team in rushing, and he is averaging five yards per carry. The Nittany Lions need to get the ball to Derek Moye more often. Moye is the most talented player on the offense, but he doesn’t touch the ball enough.

The Nittany Lions defense is responsible for the team’s impressive 8-2 record. This unit has been solid all year. Even without star linebacker Michael Mauti, this defense has been very tough. Penn State ranks third in the nation in points per game allowed at just 12.9. The defense will need to be very good this weekend.

Braxton Miller and the Buckeyes were upset in West Lafayette last weekend. Ohio State’s passing game has been non-existent most of the season, and the rushing attack wasn’t very good last week. Miller is a very elusive quarterback, but he needs to become a more efficient passer. Dan Herron gives the Buckeyes a very good running back, but it can be tough to run when the defense knows what is coming. Ohio State gets back DeVier Posey this weekend, and he should help the receiving corps quite a bit.

The Buckeyes defense hasn’t been as dominating as recent years, but this is still a quality unit. John Simon has emerged as a real leader on the defensive line. Andrew Sweat is a quality middle linebacker who covers the field well. If Ohio State is going to win, the Buckeyes will need a top notch effort out of their defense this weekend.

Don’t expect either of these teams to do much scoring this weekend. Both teams will look to establish the run early and often. In a game with two strong defenses, seven points is too much.
