Spread: Arizona -23.5
This first week of the college football season includes a Friday night late game as the Arizona Wildcats will host the UNLV Running Rebels on ESPN.
The Arizona Wildcats enter the season with high expectations and are big favorites in this contest as they are listed as 23.5 point favorites at top rated online sportsbook, BetDSI. The sports betting consensus reveals that the betting public is on the Wildcats as 66 percent of the money coming in is backing the Wildcats despite the fact that they are a double digit chalk.
The Wildcats have plenty of question marks headed into the season opener and one of those questions was answered when they revealed their starting quarterback. Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez named redshirt freshman Anu Solomon his starting quarterback for Friday night’s season-opener against UNLV. Solomon becomes the first Arizona freshman to start since 2005 and he will cut his teeth against UNLV in hopes of getting comfortable with the offense against an unranked opponent in the friendly confines in front of the faithful fan base. The Wildcats are 80-25-5 all-time in season openers highlighted by six-straight victories. They have won 12 of its last 14 openers which is a streak that should continue in this opener, although covering the spread is a different story.
UNLV is also breaking in a new quarterback as Blake Decker will get the start for the Rebels. UNLV would love Decker who comes in at 6 feet, 2 inches, 205 pounds, to put up numbers like he did last season in Scottsdale, where his 4,241 yards and 47 touchdowns easily led the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, but this is the big time now and he will face tougher defenses, starting with Arizona.
UNLV coach Bobby Hauck has the Rebels prepped more for the Wildcats’ zone read and had a suspicion that Solomon giving this team a leg up in preparation.
Both teams have some negative college football betting trends to take note of in this contest. The Rebels are 2-5-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last nine non-conference games and 12-37-4 ATS in their last 53 road games. The Wildcats are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against the Mountain West Conference, which could be a good indication that they are looking past this team.
The Arizona Wildcats are using this game as a tune up and look for Rodriguez to try different looks and rotate in different players. UNLV will be poised for revenge after a 58-13 home loss lasts season. Arizona will win this game, but they will not come close to covering double digits.
