The Florida State Seminoles were one of the few top ranked teams to avoid an upset last Saturday. While the majority of the top ten in the college football rankings were on the short end of major upsets, the Noles were taking care of business. With a No. 1 ranking firmly in grasp they now hit the road to take on the Syracuse Orange.
When Florida State took the field against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, they had yet to establish an identity. They have won every game they have played but have failed to impress and put together a complete game on both sides of the ball. All of that changed Saturday against Wake Forest.
In the past Wake Forest had played well against Florida State, but on Saturday they were dominated. The Noles defense dominated from the opening whistle holding the Wake Forest offense to just 126 total yards for the entire game. They shut down the rushing game allowing only 40 yards rushing and returned a fumble for a touchdown. This looked like the Noles dominating defense that we had seen in recent years, but they still need to work out some kinks on offense.
The Florida State offense stalled on drives and had to settle for field goals when they should have scored touchdowns. They also had two turnovers, which is two too many if you want to be a national champion.
The Orange has had a tough stretch of football lately. They have lost three straight games, all of them by double digits although they have played some good teams. The Orange can rush the ball with a talented dual threat in quarterback in Terrel Hunt, but he left the last game against Louisville with an injury. Hunt is expected to miss four-to-six weeks, so redshirt freshman Austin Wilson will get the call and limit the play calling ability of the Orange offense.
The latest college football betting trends reveal some interesting wagering angles heading into this ACC match up. The Seminoles are 6-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last 7 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game, 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game. The Orange are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a double-digit loss at home, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games but are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a loss in which they failed to cover the spread.
The Noles cannot afford to take the Syracuse game lightly and instead need to use it as a game to get in championship form for the race to the playoffs.
