South Carolina Gamecocks (-10) @ Vanderbilt Commodores: It’s amazing to think that the SEC East is going to start off this season on Thursday night, but the clash isn’t going to be one that is all that competitive in all likelihood. The Gamecocks are one of the better teams in the SEC, and there is a good chance that they could get back to the SEC title game this season for the second time in the last three years after never having been there before 2010. It’ll be great to have the spotlight on the Commodores, but they are clearly going to be the decided underdog in this game.
NC State Wolfpack vs. Tennessee Volunteers (-7): This Friday night fight is going to be a showcase game for sure for two programs that badly need to get back in the national spotlight. Both Head Coach Derek Dooley for the Vols and Head Coach Tom O’Brien for the Wolfpack know that the pressure is on this year to get their respective teams to bowl games and make them competitive once again. This is a big first clash of the year for both squads at the Georgia Dome, which is pretty much equidistant for these two major conference players.
Boise State Broncos @ Michigan State Spartans (-7.5): Boise State always complains that it never finds a way to schedule the big boys, but this time around, Michigan State is up to the challenge. It is going to be the first game for the Broncos without QB Kellen Moore in four years though, which could make this quite the challenge against a team that just missed out on the Rose Bowl and ultimately won the Capital One Bowl against a red hot bunch of Georgia Bulldogs last year. This is a game that shouldn’t be missed in Week 1.
Michigan Wolverines @ Alabama Crimson Tide (-11): The Tide rolled to the National Championship last year, and right away this season, they are going to have a primetime game at home against one of the top teams in the land. This is the chance for QB Denard Robinson to shine, and if he can figure out how to win this game, he will immediately become the favorite on the Heisman Trophy odds, and his Wolverines will be amongst the favorites to win the National Championship as well.
Navy Midshipmen vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-14): Normally speaking, the Navy/Notre Dame game is a rivalry game that is played in the middle of the season, and normally, it is played in some remarkable venues. This year though, what makes this clash a special one is that it will be played in Dublin, marking the first college football battle outside of North American soil in Irish history.
Kentucky Wildcats @ Louisville Cardinals (-13): Head Coaches Charlie Strong and Joker Phillips have both done solid jobs with their teams in their first head coaching jobs. This battle to determine whether the Commonwealth will turn blue or red is always a fierce battle played early in the season, and this year, this game will be incredibly important as well, knowing that both want to start off on the right foot before their conference campaigns begin.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets @ Virginia Tech Hokies (-7.5): Labor Day night has become a game that the ACC has coveted over the course of the last several years, but this year, the ACC Coastal Division title might be handed out as a result of the game. Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are clearly two of the best teams in the entire ACC, and the loser of this one is going to be in a heck of a lot of trouble early in the campaign. This battle at Lane Stadium should be outstanding, and if you’re a fan of ACC football, it is a game that you don’t want to miss.
