College Football Week 14 System Picks

College football teams can react different ways when they’re coming off a humiliating defeat. They can get down on themselves and continue to flounder or they can come out and look to take their frustrations out on their next opponent. If they are able to bounce back is in large part determined by who it is they are playing. A team like Kentucky may be blown out by LSU, but if their next game is against Alabama, they’re just as likely to get thumped again.

But if their next game is against Alabama A&M, the chances of a complete reversal are pretty good.

Over the years, favorites of 20 or more points, which are coming off a 20-point or greater defeat, have bounced back quite nicely, going 137-85-4 (61.7%) against the spread. This week finds three 20-point favorites coming off 20-point defeats, beginning with the Oregon Ducks, who were throttled 42-16 by Arizona last week.

The Ducks return to Autzen Stadium for Friday’s Civil War game with Oregon State and the Ducks are favored by 21.5 points. While Oregon’s loss to Arizona was a stunner, the play of the Beavers is also a bit of a surprise, as Mike Riley’s crew has dropped four straight, including a 69-27 butt-kicking at the hands of Washington last week. The Ducks will be re-focused for this one and can see them rolling.

Also on Friday, Ball State will look to erase the memory of its loss to Northern Illinois and who better to take their frustrations out on than a winless Miami-Ohio team that has allowed 40 or more points in three of their last four games. Check the weather before laying the 34.5 points, however.

On Saturday, Indiana looks to get back in the win column after facing Wisconsin and Ohio State in back-to-back weeks and should find Purdue a willing accomplice. The Boilermakers have just a victory over Indiana State back on Sept. 7 to their credit and are just 2-5 this year as double-digit underdogs.
