The 10th ranked Connecticut Huskies take to the road this Wednesday night to do battle with the Cincinnati Bearcats in their first Big East Conference game of the season. The Huskies have already suffered a few losses this season, but it was to two of the best teams in the country in Duke and Kentucky. The Huskies now get ready for the tough conference schedule starting with Cincinnati. The Bearcats suffered two overtime loss to Gonzaga and Xavier, but they are a very young team that will only get better as the season progresses.
One big hurdle in the Bearcats way of scoring their biggest win of the season Wednesday night is the health of freshman guard Lance Stephenson. Stephenson has been bothered by an ankle injury and is listed as questionable for Wednesday’s game. It will be a blow to the Bearcats if their freshman guard is not 100% considering he leads the team in scoring. However, the Bearcats have plenty of young players eager to step up in front of a nationally televised audience. One of those guys is sophomore forward Yancy Gates who has stepped up most of the big games this season. Gates is averaging just 11 points and 6 rebounds per game, but he tends to play well in the spotlight. However, it will be interesting to see how well Yates performs against the Huskies big men on the inside.
Those Huskies players on the inside that could give the Bearcats a lot of problems in the paint are senior forwards Stanley Robinson and Gavin Edwards. Robinson perhaps the biggest threat has averaged 17 points while pulling down 7.5 boards per game. Edwards is pulling down near 7 boards per game and averaging 11 points per contest as well. However, senior guard Jerome Dyson is the biggest scorer for the Huskies. Dyson is averaging 20 points per game this season which ranks 3rd in the Big East. However, the Bearcats run a slower pace style of play so it will be interesting to see how effective the big scorers are for Connecticut when the game is slowed down from normal pace.
Both Connecticut and Cincinnati are averaging right at the 73 point mark per game along with nearly 42 rebounds per game as well. However, as a whole the Huskies have shot the ball much better this season knocking down 47% of their shots and they will be favorites as they have a big edge in experience over Cincinnati. Also, the Bearcats have lost the last 4 straight meetings in recent years and will be trying to finally score a victory over the Huskies who are commonly one of the top teams in the conference.
Betting Trends –
