Denver has been opened as the odds-on-favorite to win it all this season by VietBet and in what many believe was a preview of the next Super Bowl, it grinded-out a 10-6 victory over San Francisco as a three-point underdog on the road last Thursday night in its first preseason game. The total stayed way UNDER the 35.5-point line.
Many people automatically think about Peyton Manning and the Broncos’ high-powered passing attack when handicapping this team, but its real strength is a defense that was ranked second only to Pittsburgh last season. This unit was extremely well balanced; ranking third in the NFL against both the run and the pass. Manning should get more of a chance to show off what he can do this Saturday night after throwing a total of four passes against the 49ers.
The Seahawks opened their preseason with an impressive 31-10 rout of San Diego last Thursday night as three-point road favorites. The total went OVER the 36-point line. While it is never wise to put too much emphasis on what happens in these games, the fact that Seattle looked sharp playing on the road is always a plus. That will not be a factor in this game as it will face Denver on its home turf on Saturday night where the team went 8-0 straight-up and 7-1 against the spread last season.
The big question for the Seahawks coming into the 2013 season is can quarterback Russell Wilson avoid a sophomore slump and pick-up where he left off last year with a run that had this team just three points away from earning a trip to the NFC Championship Game? He looked a bit rusty against the Chargers with just two completions for 23 yards on six passing attempts, but he should get a better chance to shake off that rust with more playing time against Denver. Rookie running back Christine Michael looked sharp running the ball last Thursday night with 89 yards on 16 carries, but he remains questionable for Saturday night after suffering some back spasms this week in practice.
We will definitely see a more accurate version of both these teams on Saturday night at least through the first half. This is shaping-up as another hard-nosed defensive battle between two of the best units in the league. Look for both offenses to struggle putting points on the board and while Seattle should get the win at home, the free NFL pick in this matchup on the UNDER.
