NFL Pick – Week 5
Peyton Manning gets a chance to face an old nemesis this Sunday afternoon with his new team. The Broncos come into this matchup at 2-2 both straight-up and against the spread after pounding Oakland 37-6 last Sunday as 6.5-point favorites at home. It was clearly Manning’s best performance this season after missing all last year recovering from neck surgery.
The key to pulling off the upset on the road clearly lies in his hands, but it would also help if Denver can generate a bit more production from its ground game this week to take some of the pressure of his back. Willis McGahee has rushed for 325 yards so far and the Broncos are averaging 109 total rushing yards a game. Another key is the continued solid play of a defense that is ranked seventh in the league in total yards allowed.
New England’s 2-2 SU start (3-1 ATS) has been filled with blow-out wins over Tennessee and Buffalo, a heart-breaking one-point loss to Baltimore and a head-scratching 20-18 loss to Arizona as a 13-point favorite at home. Last Sunday’s second-half offensive explosion against the Bills could be a sign of things to come as Tom Brady finally looked like his old self throwing the ball and putting points on the board
Problems on the defensive side of the ball still exist for the Patriots especially against the pass where they are ranked 25th in yards allowed. They have done a good job at shutting down the run, but overall the defense is ranked 20th in total yards allowed and 18th in points allowed. It will have to do a much better job this Sunday to keep Manning in check.
New England has usually gotten the better of Manning over the years when he played for Indianapolis, but this game is a chance for a new start with his new team. The current spread is right on the money so the real opportunity in this matchup is a play on the total line by taking this game to go OVER the 50.5 points. New England 34 Denver 28
