NFL Betting Favorite: Packers -6.5
The Bears and Packers are the biggest rivals in the NFC North, but the Lions and Packers certainly don’t have any love for each other either. Detroit is coming off a nice win over the Bears, while the Packers are coming off a bye week following a disappointing loss at Cincinnati. Green Bay really needs this game so they don’t fall too far behind in the NFC North.
The Detroit Lions are 3-1 and tied with the Bears atop the NFC North. The Lions are a much better team thanks to the presence of Reggie Bush in the backfield. Bush gives this team the elite runner they have been missing for many years. Bush is averaging 5.3 yards per carry so far this year, and he is a great weapon when catching the ball out of the backfield as well. Calvin Johnson is probably the best receiver in the NFL. Johnson already has four touchdown receptions on the year. Matt Stafford has a very good 96.2 quarterback rating so far this year. Detroit is averaging 30.5 points per game, and I expect them to continue to be one of the best offenses in the NFL.
The Lions defense still hasn’t been as good as expected so far this year. It has primarily been the offense outscoring opponents this season. The defensive front is very talented, but they haven’t quite lived up to expectations. Detroit is allowing 25.2 points per game, which is 20th in the NFL. The Lions are going to have get better at getting off the field on third downs. Eventually, they’ll need a crucial stop at the end of a game to get a big win.
The Green Bay Packers have to be the scariest 1-2 team in the NFL. Green Bay is clearly one of the top five or six teams in the league, but they have dropped two of their first three contests. I fully expect the Packers to have a very good season, and the oddsmakers are showing their respect for them by making them almost a touchdown favorite here. Aaron Rodgers is one of the best players in the NFL, and he has more weapons around him than he has had in recent years. Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin were great picks in the draft, and that has made the Packers running game much better. Green Bay is ninth in the NFL in rushing yards per game.
Rodgers still has Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and Jermichael Finley (questionable for this game due to a concussion) as top pass catchers as well. Rodgers has 10 TD’s and just three picks and a 105.3 quarterback rating on the season. This Packers offense will score a bunch of points all year. The defense has been very good against the run, but they have to improve against the pass. The Packers are giving up 311 yards per game through the air.
Free Pick: Over 53
It’s hard to imagine these teams not scoring quite a few points here. Both offenses are much better than they were a year ago. Look for a shootout in Green Bay on Sunday.
