New Orleans Bowl Pick – December 22nd
Conference-USA’s East Carolina Pirates come into this early bowl season showdown with an overall record of 8-4 straight-up and a 6-6 record against the spread. The Pirates closed-out the season with the total going OVER in four of their last five games including a wild 65-59 overtime victory over Marshall as a 6.5-point home favorite in its season finale. The total line for that game was set at 70.
East Carolina had little problem putting points on the board this season with an average of 31.3 points a game, but its defense actually gave-up 30.7 points a game which was ranked 86th in Division-IA. Look for quarterback Shane Carden to try and move the ball down the field in big chunks while running back Vintavious Cooper continues to grind thing out on the ground with an average of 5.4 yards a carry. Cooper gained a total of 1,030 yards rushing while Carden threw for 2,838 yards and 21 touchdowns.
The Rajin Cajuns also finished the season at 8-4 SU and were 7-5 ATS. The total went an even 5-5-1 on the year. They come into this bowl game with four SU victories in four their last five games. The only loss during this stretch was a hard-fought 27-20 setback to No.3 Florida as 27.5 underdogs on the road.
UL-Lafayette was one of the most balanced teams in the nation on offence during the regular season with a passing game that averaged 256.3 yards a game to complement a rushing attack that racked-up 187.3 yards a game on the ground. Quarterback Terrance Broadway proved to be a duel threat with 2,526 yards passing and 16 touchdowns to go along with 661 yards and eight more scores running with the ball. The Rajin Cajuns also had a porous defense at times this season; giving-up an average of 27.6 points a game.
This has the makings of a very entertaining matchup between two high-powered offenses that can move the ball very quickly up and down the field. While the game should remain fairly tight into the fourth quarter, stick with Broadway and the UL-Lafayette offense to wear down the Pirates to win and cover the current five-point spread in what basically amounts to a home game at the New Orleans Superdome.
