ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Betting Preview: New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies

New York Mets
(14-10, +$396)

Philadelphia Phillies
(13-10, -$83)

First place in the National League East Division will be on the line in ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball betting duel between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies from the City of Brotherly Love. These two not-so-brotherly foes have played two very lopsided games so far in this series. The Mets captured a 9-1 victory on Friday night to push their winning streak to eight games, but on Saturday, RHP Roy Halladay tossed a three hitter to end that run and get the Phils back within a half game of New York as we close out the weekend.

Out of five outings this year, LHP Johan Santana has really only looked remotely hittable in one of them. New York’s southpaw is 3-1 with a miniscule 2.08 ERA, and the only reason his numbers are that bad is because Washington rocked him for five runs on April 11th. Santana’s control remains impeccable, as he has just nine walks against 28 Ks and 30.1 IPs. He’s had a great career against the Phillies as well, which is great news for Mets bettors tonight, going 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA in nine career starts.

The ageless wonder, LHP Jaime Moyer will oppose New York’s lefty tonight. Moyer, who is now 48 years old, hasn’t been solid this year, but he has done enough to stick around as a prototypical #5 starter in this league. He has thrown exactly six innings in all of his starts, and he has a 5.25 ERA to show for it. Manager Charlie Manuel would much prefer that Moyer didn’t allow over a home run per start (five in four outings), but all things considered, Moyer has probably done his job this year.

One would immediately think that this is a pitching mismatch and that Santana must be backed. However, the New York lineup just looked lost yesterday, and we’re not convinced that the Mets are figuring it out today against Moyer either. Expect to see a relatively low scoring game until the bullpens get involved. That’s when the Phils should bust out and take home another ‘W’.
