ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball betting showdown this week heads to the Peach State, where the Atlanta Braves will look to get back on track against the red hot Washington Nationals.
Hopes have been really high for the Nats this year, and they are going to look to extend their lead in the NL East even further with this game on Sunday night. A clean sweep at Turner Field would be the biggest accomplishment for this team this year. Give the Nationals a ton of credit for building this team with youth and great training for sure. Of course, good trades have been a part of this as well, and this is what we have been talking about with the likes of Gio Gonzalez, who will be hurling on Sunday. Gonzalez already is 6-1 this year, and he is one of the few pitchers in baseball that still has a sub-2.00 ERA. The former member of the Oakland Athletics is striking out just a ton of batters seemingly every time out there, and a day after watching Stephen Strasburg throw a dominating start, there isn’t any reason to believe that Gonzalez won’t be able to do the same.
Atlanta is in some trouble at the moment, and six straight losses have taken the team out of the way in the NL East for the time being. The offense just isn’t getting the job done, and the bullpen doesn’t look as dominating as it did last year and earlier this season. The good news though, is that Brandon Beachy is going to be on the bump on Sunday. Beachy has been the best pitcher on the Braves this year by a country mile, going 5-2 with a staff-best 1.77 ERA. Beachy has 44 strikeouts against just 15 walks this year, but perhaps the most impressive stat about him is that he has a 0.90 WHIP. Batters just don’t see the ball all that well against Beachy, and they are hitting just .183 against him. This is a man that is turning into an innings eater as well, as 61 frames in just nine outings is quite impressive, especially for a man that sometimes can be erratic with his control.
The Braves have been bad for a full week now, even with Beachy on the mound. We think that the patient Nationals are going to get the best out of this one to finish off yet another very impressive series against a National League pennant contender on the road in fine form.
