St. Louis Cardinals
First place is on the line in the NL Central on Wednesday night in the rubber match MLB betting affair between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals. Last night, the Reds captured a 9-8 victory to reclaim the one game lead that they had in the division prior to losing 12-4 to the Redbirds on Memorial Day.
For just the second time in his career, RHP Sam LeCure will be taking the hill for manager Dusty Baker. The rookie earned a win in his first outing against the Astros in a game in which he received all of the run support in the world (15 runs to be exact). LeCure had an issue with walking batters, as he allowed four free passes in six frames, but he did strike out five and only ultimately surrendered two earned runs for the ‘W’. LeCure, 26, knows that his time in the Cincinnati rotation could be short, so he must be looking to make the most of his opportunities in his time in the big leagues.
RHP Chris Carpenter is probably still a legitimate Cy Young Award candidate in spite of the fact that Colorado Rockies RHP Ubaldo Jimenez is putting up numbers that are out of this world. Carpenter is 6-1 with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Opposing batters are hitting just .233 against him. The righty has struck out 66 batters, an average of an even six per game, and he has only had 19 batters get free rides to first base against him. Ever since his first outing of the year when he conceded seven runs in five innings against the Brewers, Carpenter has pitched at least six innings and hasn’t allowed more than four earned runs in any start.
Carpenter has a great career against the Reds at 9-3 with a 2.03 ERA. However, these are some ridiculous odds that we would have to lay against a very good ballclub to be able to back him. Instead, we’re going to take our chances that LeCure can keep his team in the game, and that the Reds can keep this game close into the bullpens.
