ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball Betting Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees
Tampa Bay Rays
New York Yankees
For the second time this season, the top two teams in the American League East will collide in MLB betting action as the Tampa Bay Rays face the New York Yankees. The Rays just finished off a two-game sweep against the Cleveland Indians for their fourth straight win. New York looked to be taking a pair of games from the Red Sox as well at home, but RHP Joba Chamberlain and RHP Mariano Rivera combined to blow a 5-1 lead in the final two frames. In the middle of April, the Bronx Bombers captured two out of three games, including an absolute gem by LHP CC Sabathia in a 10-0 shutout. The Yankees are three games behind Tampa Bay coming into this series.
RHP Wade Davis has been the picture of consistency for the Rays this season. He may only be 3-3, but he has a stellar 3.38 ERA. Davis did allow four runs in his lone appearance against the Yanks this year, and he is 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in two career starts against them. Walks are haunting Davis this year, as he has conceded 21 free passes in just 40.0 innings of work. Manager Joe Maddon is thrilled with his progress this year though, and better things can be expected from the Rookie of the Year candidate.
It appears as though the memories of a nine-run performance against the Red Sox on May 9th is out of RHP AJ Burnett’s mind. The right-hander fired back and conceded just two earned runs on seven hits in an 8-4 win over Minnesota five days ago. For the season, Burnett is 4-1 with a 3.31 ERA. He has had three starts this year without allowing an earned run and two more with two runs allowed. One of those two came in one of his better starts of the year against these Rays, when he gave up just six hits in seven frames.
It’s not often that we look at a baseball betting line and say, “Wow, this is a great price on the Yankees!” However, for a change, it’s Tampa Bay’s 15-4 road record that is inflating this price. New York knows that this could be a very dangerous mini-series for it, as two losses to the Rays would leave it five games back of first place. Manager Joe Girardi won’t let that happen.
