ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball Betting Preview: Seattle Mariners vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Seattle Mariners
(23-39, -$1,822)

St. Louis Cardinals
(34-28, -$571)

MLB betting action on Monday night might not be extensive, but baseball wagering warriors won’t want to miss out on the duel in the Gateway to the West between the Seattle Mariners and the St. Louis Cardinals. This is the first game of a three game set at Busch Stadium. The M’s have dropped five straight and eight out of nine and are in a world of hurt in the AL West standings in a year in which they were expected to compete for the division crown. The Cardinals are still in a dogfight with the Cincinnati Reds, sitting 1.5 games back after dropping five out of six of their own as well.

Manager Don Wakamatsu is running out of ideas and options for his much maligned pitching staff this year. He will send 24 year old LHP Luke French to the hill for the first time as a starting pitcher in 2010 on Monday. French has made a pair of relief appearances and has allowed four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. For his career, the southpaw has only made 17 career appearances and a dozen starts, going 4-5 with a 5.30 ERA. His WHIP is a ridiculously high 1.68, largely thanks to the fact that opposing batters are hitting .317 against him lifetime.

In theory, this should be an easy day at the park for RHP Adam Wainwright. The right-hander is 8-4 with a 2.30 ERA, and he has already amassed a whopping 91 strikeouts over just 94.0 innings of work in his 13 starts on the season. Wainwright was knocked around for four earned runs in six innings of work in Dodgertown just five days ago, which dropped him to a mortal 3-3 in his L/6 starts. However, in those six outings, he has only allowed eight earned runs and has thrown at least six frames in all six games. Wainwright walked five batters in that loss to Los Angeles on June 9th, which is uncharacteristic for a man that is averaging 2.69 walks per nine innings in his career.

We just hate laying this type of chalk in baseball games, but there really isn’t any other choice on Monday night. The Cardinals are clearly the better team, they’re playing at home, and the pitching matchup may as well be David vs. Goliath. Barring some sort of a freakish outing by French or a miserable start by Wainwright, we don’t see any other result than a comfortable win for the hosts. Don’t be afraid to lay the run line in this MLB betting battle either.
