ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball Betting Preview: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies
St. Louis Cardinals
MLB betting fans could be watching a potential playoff preview on ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball, as the NL Central leading St. Louis Cardinals face off with the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies. These squads have split the first two games of this series. C Carlos Ruiz blasted a game-winning solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning on Tuesday night to give Philadelphia a narrow 2-1 victory in a tremendous pitcher’s duel.
The Cardinals have gotten everything that they ever could’ve asked for out of RHP Brad Penny this season. He is 3-1 with a 1.56 ERA. His strikeout to walk ratio is a rock solid 18/8, his WHIP is a miniscule 1.18, and convention thought would assume that his .264 batting average against could even drop as the season wears on if he continues to pitch this well. Penny hasn’t conceded more than three earned runs in a game all season long, but the Cards are only 3-2 in his five starts thanks to the fact that they are only averaging 2.2 runs per game of production for him.
RHP Kyle Kendrick hasn’t been nearly as solid for the Phils. The 25 year old has struggled, allowing at least four earned runs in all but one of his five outings this year. He has given up six dingers, five of which have come in his L/2 starts. Manager Charlie Manuel has to consider giving up on his right-hander if he has any better options in AAA or in his bullpen if Kendrick can’t start to produce. At least he knows that Kendrick is 3-0 in three career starts against the Cardinals, which could give the youngster some confidence heading to the bump tonight.
We just have no business betting on Kendrick right now even if he has never been beaten by the Cardinals. Penny is throwing the ball superbly at the moment, and we’d like to think that the St. Louis bullpen is more likely to nail down a victory after a solid start than the Philadelphia bullpen is. The choice tonight is an easy one.
