NCAA Football – Week 2
The 2012 Big East season kicks off for college football betting fans on Thursday night when the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Cincinnati Bearcats get it on at Nippert Stadium in what should amount to be a fantastic duel to kick off Week 2 of the season.
It wasn’t the ideal start to the season for the Panthers for sure last week. They were 18.5-point favorites against the Youngstown State Penguins, and they had to figure that they were just going to be able to get up and roll over their FCS instate foes. Instead, it was Youngstown State that really looked the part of a great team, as it led from start to finish at Heinz Field. The loss was an embarrassment, not just to the Panthers, but to the Big East as a whole, and it was one of the many frustrating defeats that the conference has suffered in recent times. QB Tino Sunseri and RB Ray Graham should be leading an offense that is a heck of a lot more talented than this, but the real question is whether the team is adjusting well to all of these new coaches. Remember that over the course of the last two years, these players have gone from Dave Wannstedt to Mike Haywood to Todd Graham, and now to Paul Chryst, and each man has had his own version of what he wants this offense to do.
Cincinnati has some higher hopes this year for success. The team was off last week, and that gave QB Munchie Legaux a better chance to get accustomed to what has become his offense. Legaux has a great arm, and he has the ability to scramble all over the place if need be, but his accuracy and decision making both definitely lack. After losing RB Isaiah Pead to the NFL in the offseason, there could be a real hole in the backfield, and if that turns out to be the case, Legaux is going to have to make sure to take better care of the football and make smarter choices to be able to keep momentum going when the Bearcats have it. The defense will be key as well, as this is an offense that isn’t going to be dropping 30+ on every single foe. There are going to have to be a lot of ugly wins this year, and this would be the first of them.
The bad news for the Bearcats is that they are just beating severely overrated in this game. Yes, they are probably the deserved favorites because they are going to be at home, but for all of the garbage that Pittsburgh put out there last week against Youngstown State, at least it was out there and had a chance to start to grow. The Panthers might be the better of these two teams, and we think that they might be primed for a “get better” upset of the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium on Thursday night. Pittsburgh 23 – Cincinnati 21
