One of the up and coming stars of the WTA Tour has her grandest opportunity to earn some silverware, but there are still three rounds still to play for No. 15 Andrea Petkovic. Her quarterfinals French Open betting affair comes against No. 7 Maria Sharapova, whom many think is the favorite on the French Open betting lines to win this event.
Petkovic made a tremendous move last year in the US Open, making it all the way to the fourth round of the event. Now this year, she parlayed that into a quarterfinals finish at the Australian Open, her best in a Grand Slam event in her career. Now, she can better that. She’s one of the few women that can say that she was in the quarterfinals of both of the majors this year, and she now has a chance to log her biggest victory of her career in this fixture. This is going to be the first time at the French Open in which she is going to be playing on one of the major courts at Roland Garros. We’ve already seen the No. 15 ranked player in this tournament take care of two of the middling ranked players in this event in No. 24 Jarmila Gajdosova and No. 25 Maria Kirilenko. She was forced to three sets in both battles though, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 respectively, and this Petkovic is going to need to have the battle of her life to take care of Sharapova.
Sharapova has tasted Grand Slam glory in her career at all of the rest of the events on the WTA Tour, but never here at Roland Garros. This would put her in extremely rare company, as there are just so few women in the world that can say that they have pulled off this feat. Sharapova does feel like she has been around for quite some time, but the truth of the matter is that she still has a ton of tennis coming in her career. She has only played in nine French Opens in her career, and she has been a quarterfinalist five times now. She’s also still just 24 years old. She had a tremendous three set match against Caroline Garcia in the second round of this tournament, but aside from that, there haven’t been a ton of challenges. The biggest since that point came from Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 12 rated player in this tournament. The Russian survived that event 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Now, with so many of the favorites that are out of this event, this is the grandest chance to claim this most elusive of the Grand Slam jewels.
Nothing is going to get in the way of the Russian beauty in this one. We know that there is plenty of tennis coming from Petkovic in her career, but this just isn’t that moment. Don’t bet against Sharapova in this tournament the rest of the way unless the French Open odds are ridiculous. She’ll probably make it into the semifinals with ease. Back Sharapova -210 on the French Open betting lines.
