Game Overview

Someone will be taking a 2-1 series lead into the fourth game of the NLDS on Wednesday afternoon, and the two teams that will be duking it out in Game 3 for MLB betting fans will be the Washington Nationals and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cards can’t really feel good about their prospects of taking two out of three here in DC, but at least they struck most recently when they put up a whopping 12 run in a romp of the Nationals two nights ago. The bullpen has been overworked thanks to the fact that Adam Wainwright only lasted 5.2 innings in Game 1 and Jamie Garcia was only good for two frames before getting injured in Game 2. That heaps a ton of pressure on Chris Carpenter off of this off day on Wednesday. Carpenter is a risky start in this one, as he went 0-2 in just three starts this year, and he led the team to defeat in all three games. The splits for Carpenter were just fine, as he had a 1.12 WHIP and a 3.71 ERA. The problem? He only got a total of five runs of help from his teammates in his three starts. Carpenter was a dominating pitcher for years for the Redbirds, but arm troubles cost him the mass majority of this season. Can he be ready for a run here in the playoffs? St. Louis had better hope so.

There aren’t going to be many nights in which the Nationals don’t have the better pitcher in the playoffs, but this third pitching spot is the one that really has them troubled. Manager Davey Johnson would have Jordan Zimmerman in this spot if he had Stephen Strasburg at the top of the rotation, but he doesn’t, and as a result, he is left with Edwin Jackson. Jackson definitely didn’t have a poor year for Washington at all, and he is a man that has been all around and pitched in basically every situation there is to pitch in. He went 10-11 this year in 31 starts, but he had a 4.03 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP, respectable numbers for a man that was brought to Washington to be a back of the rotation starter. The issue that Jackson has? The last time he faced the Cards was just two starts ago, and he lasted 1.1 innings, issued six hits, four walks, and nine runs, eight of which were earned.

Prediction

Many are looking at that last start for Jackson and just assume that he is going to get clobbered again. We just don’t see it that way, though. Remember that this is the first home game for the Nationals in the playoffs in decades and decades, and the fans are really going to be the 10th man out there for the home team. Go with the hosts at a great price to win a gritty game. Washington 3 – St. Louis 1
