Georgetown Hoyas vs. Memphis Tigers Preview and Pick
(10-1, 8-2 ATS)
(9-1, 2-6 ATS)
Before you get ready to sit down at your holiday tables at the end of the week, you know you aren’t going to want to miss the action between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Memphis Tigers in college basketball betting festivities! These two tourney teams meet up at FedEx Forum on Thursday night, and the action should be intense.
There really isn’t much of anything that the Hoyas can’t do. They can shoot, they can run, they can press, they can defend, and they can rebound, and they do it all very, very well. This is a team that might be the crème de la crème in the best conference in America, and it is one that is well on its way to a Top 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament this year as well. Averaging 80.5 points per game is good enough to rank No. 21 in the nation, but what Georgetown really does well is shoot the rock. The Hoyas rank No. 2 in the country in field goal percentage at 52.5 percent and No. 4 in three point shooting at 42.5 percent. We know that Austin Freeman and Jason Clark aren’t afraid to pull the trigger. These two are combining to score 32.7 points per game this year, and both are shooting at least 52 percent from the field and 45 percent from downtown. The real bulk of this team is on the inside, though. Men like Julian Vaughn, Hollis Thompson, and Henry Sims are dominating in the post, and any of the three would be the top big man on most teams in America.
Memphis isn’t laying down though, and it isn’t going to be intimidated playing in front of the bright lights of a national television audience. The Tigers would be in significantly better shape in this game if they had the services of Wesley Witherspoon, but with him out of the lineup until the middle of January, the team is going to have to cope. Though there really isn’t a proficient scorer on this team like Witherspoon, there are a number of guys that can all score six, eight, ten points on the average night. Of late, things really haven’t gone well for the men from Conference USA, as they have narrow overtime escapes from the Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Austin Peay Governors of late, and they only beat the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders by five. Also mixed in there was the bad 11 point loss to the Kansas Jayhawks. Still, this is a team that plays stellar press defense and is only allowing 67.2 points per game because of the pace in which it flies up and down the court on a regular basis.
All signs really point towards a Georgetown victory except for one. This is a horrifyingly difficult road test in an NBA arena for the Hoyas, and the only time that they really ran across a situation like this against a “mid major” team, they were beaten by the Temple Owls. We’re not certain that the Tigers are winning this game, but we know that we love the fact that they are catching 4.5 points on their home court.
