NFL Betting Favorite: Eagles -5.5
The New York Giants picked up their first win of the season this past Monday over the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants appear to be improving the last couple weeks, but at 1-6 on the year and 0-4 away from home, the Giants have some major problems. Philadelphia was a complete mess in a 17-3 home loss to the Cowboys last weekend. The Eagles are still in a position to fight for the NFC East title, but they need to win this game.
The Giants are second to last in the NFL in rushing yards per game. New York’s passing attack has gotten going a bit in the last two weeks, but overall it has been very disappointing as well. Eli Manning has thrown 15 interceptions in the team’s first seven games. He has a terrible quarterback rating of just 66.5. It’s hard to find anyone on this offense that hasn’t been a disappointment through the first seven weeks of the year. The team’s leading rusher is Brandon Jacobs with 154 yards. If your team’s leading rusher has 154 yards after seven weeks, you know you are in trouble!
The Giants defense hasn’t been much better than the offense. To be fair, this defense has been put in a lot of bad spots because of the ridiculous amount of turnovers from the Giants. New York is 19th in total defense, but they are allowing 30.9 points per game because the other team has had a short field so many times. The pass rush isn’t even close to as good as it used to be. Mathias Kiwanuka leads the team in sacks with 1.5. This defense needs to establish an identity.
The Philadelphia Eagles had a great chance to sit atop the NFC East. The Eagles were 3-3 and tied for the lead in the division when Dallas came to town last week. Philadelphia proceeded to play its worst game of the year. Nick Foles was 11 for 29 passing before getting knocked out with a concussion. Matt Barkley then came in and threw three interceptions in the second half. Mike Vick was unavailable in that game, but he is listed as probable for this one. LeSean McCoy is having a great year. McCoy excels in Chip Kelly’s offense. He has run for 952 yards, while averaging 4.9 yards per carry so far this year. The Eagles are putting up 425.3 yards per game, but only 24.1 points per contest.
Philadelphia’s defense has been a real problem this season. The Eagles are dead last in the NFL in total yards per game allowed this year. The run defense has been slightly above average, but the secondary has been a disaster. Opponents are throwing for 312 yards per game against this unit. DeMeco Ryans leads the team in tackles with 47. This defense will have to get better for the Eagles to contend in the NFC East.
Free Pick: Over 52
Both offenses should get going as they did in the first meeting between these two. Look for this one to get past the posted total.
