The Indianapolis Colts have barely escaped their first loss of the season over the past few games as the last 3 contest have been decided by a field goal or less. However, the Colts have managed to hold off all challengers and remain unbeaten on the season. QB Peyton Manning caught fire early in the year and those flames are still burning on high as he leads the NFL averaging 314 yards per game. Manning also leads the NFL with 22 touchdowns and he will be the man everyone has their eyes on against this Sunday afternoon when the Colts battle their AFC South rival in the Houston Texans.
Houston fell just short of knocking Tennessee of their hot streak on Monday night. The Texans simply could not stop running back Chris Johnson who racked up over 150 yards on the ground. The Texans will now turn their defensive concerns from the ground to the air this week as they look to become just the 3rd team to hold Peyton Manning under 300 yards passing this season. The Texans defense has been a work in progress this season, but that have been improving as well. Houston has held opponents to just 20 points per game this season and they will possibly need to be even better this Sunday afternoon.
The Texans offense definitely has the firepower to contend with the Colts. QB Matt Schaub is averaging 284 yards per game which is good enough for 3rd best in the NFL. Schaub is actually just a completion or so away from reaching the 3,000 yard mark on the season and the entire Texans passing attack is as solid as any. One reason is WR Andre Johnson who has caught 58 passes for 878 yards with 8 scores on the season. Johnson led the NFL last season in receiving yards and is well on his way to another great year. However, the Texans will need him to be great this Sunday especially with the recent loss of tight end Owen Daniels. With limited targets, will the Texans offense produce the power needed to bring home the victory?
One thing that is certain is if the Texans are to have a chance to win then the defense must play great. The Colts offense has been dynamite from Manning’s hot arm. WR Reggie Wayne has been the big recipient racking up 968 yards as the NFL’s top receiver this season. Wayne has caught 76 passes while also posting 8 scores. Along with Dallas Clark who has caught 65 passes for another 771 yards, it is easy to see why the Colts offense is so dangerous.
Clark is the go to guy in critical situations to move the chains and Wayne gives the ability to break a big play on any given down. That presents a ton of stress on defenses and allows Manning to find other open receivers as well. Manning has thrown 9 interceptions this season and the turnover battle could be the key factor. Schaub threw 2 interceptions in the last meeting that resulted in a 20-17 Colts win as the turnovers played factor in that contest and Manning must not force any passes to give Houston any extra chances this Sunday.
Betting Trends -
Indianapolis is 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games and a stellar 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games on the road. The Colts have also reached the under in the last 4 of 6 contests. Houston has also favored the under reach the under total in 6 of the last 7 games. The Texans have been on a disappointing 1-3-1 run ATS, but are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against the Colts.
