The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians are going to be duking it out in a crucial series in the Bronx starting on Monday night, and MLB betting fans aren’t going to want to miss this clash on ESPN.
The Indians are still hanging in there in the AL Central, and we are getting to the point that they are perhaps going to be considering being buyers instead of sellers at the trade deadline. There’s still a long month of baseball to go though, and June is going to be a real test for this team. Cleveland is going to have the arm that it wants to have on the mound to start this series, as RHP Justin Masterson is going to be on the hill. Masterson is 8-3 to show for his work through 12 games on the campaign, and the Tribe are 9-3 in those outings. Masterson has a 3.07 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP, and in spite of the fact that the team is only giving him 4.0 runs of support per game, he is routinely finding ways to get the job done. Keep in mind though, that the Yankees are hitting the ball a heck of a lot better off of righties than they are off of lefties, and they could get to Masterson in this one.
Of course, there is something else to remember as well. The Indians are only batting .258 as a team this season, and they are batting .265 against left-handed pitchers. That could bode poorly for LHP Andy Pettitte, who is scheduled to start on Monday. Pettitte is legitimately the ageless wonder at this point in his career, and it’s remarkable that, in spite of the fact that he has no clue how to hit 90 MPH on the radar, that he is still pitching at a very high level. This southpaw has a 3.83 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in his eight starts thus far this season. It is a bit concerning that he hasn’t even reached 50 innings yet on the year, but Manager Joe Girardi knows that he is just looking to get six frames out of his veteran and hope that the bullpen can carry the load the rest of the way. The offense is starting to look better on paper, as 1B Mark Teixeira and 3B Kevin Youkilis are back in the lineup. However, this team has gone nine straight games without scoring more than four runs, including scoring just one run in the final two games of the series this weekend against the Boston Red Sox.
It’s embarrassing that the Indians are the underdogs in this game. Masterson is the better of these two pitchers and the Indians have the better of these two lineups. Cleveland is going to come into the Bronx and take the first game of this series with ease, and until the Yanks can figure out how to score five or more in a game, we have no confidence backing them.
