NCAA Basketball Pick – March 11th

It has been a tough year for the CAA, as this has been a conference that has been down from some rough non-conference results. That being said, the CAA still has a team that is going to be in the NCAA Tournament, and that team will be the one that beats the NCAA basketball betting lines in Monday’s finale between the Northeastern Huskies and the James Madison Dukes.

The Dukes have had a good go of it of late, taking down three straight games both from an SU and an ATS perspective. The club has covered six of its last seven, and JMU is now one of the best ATS teams in America at 20-10 to go with that stellar 19-14 SU mark. When you look at the numbers for the Dukes though, you have to realize that this is a team that has been very fortunate to get by. They are averaging just 65.0 points per game this year and are only just barely outscoring their foes. What else does that mean? This is a team that is gritty and has the ability to win close games. The win against the Delaware Blue Hens in the second round of this tournament came by a single point, and that marked the seventh win this year by five points or fewer. That’s the type of toughness that you need when you come to finals in conference tournaments, and that’s why JMU has a chance to dance.

It hasn’t always been the best season in the world for the Huskies, but alas, they are the No. 1 seed in this tournament and are at minimum, falling into the NIT if this one is lost. The eye is on the prize of being in the NCAA Tournament though, and that will only be acquired if Northeastern can knock off the Dukes. It’s odd to see the Huskies as underdogs in the tournament in which they are the top seed, but they were 1.5-point dogs to the George Mason Patriots. However, there is definitely a cause for concern. The last time Northeastern scored a win as a favorite, it came as a 2.5-point chalk on the road at the Old Dominion Monarchs (the 5-25 ODU Monarchs), and the game was won in overtime. What we do see out of these Huskies though, is that they play a team variety of basketball. There are four scorers that are good for at least 10.0 points per game and three more that are good for at least 5.7 points per game. Everyone can distribute the basketball, and the ball gets around the court quickly and efficiently.

This is the toughest game to handicap that we have seen in the conference tournaments. We think that the Huskies are going to be the short underdogs in this game for a reason. James Madison is a touched team right now, and we think that it is a club that deserves to dance. James Madison 67 – Northeastern 64
