NCAA Basketball Pick

The Kentucky Wildcats are back in the top 25 after a strong recent stretch, but they are still looking for that huge win to give them some major momentum. Florida was on pace to be the new number one in the country until they were smoked by Arkansas last week. Can the Gators get back on track with a big win or will Kentucky’s youngsters come of age in this SEC showdown?

Game Overview:

Kentucky dominated the college basketball world last year en route to a NCAA title. Nearly the entire team left, but this year’s group was another very highly touted bunch of freshmen. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance from this young Kentucky team, but they have fallen far short of the level many believed they could be at right now. This team hasn’t been nearly consistent enough so far this year. They have won five straight games heading into this one though, so it appears they are on the right track.

Five guys average double figures in scoring for Kentucky. Archie Goodwin leads the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. Kyle Wiltjer is the team’s best long range shooter, and he averages 11.7 points per game. Alex Poythress has had some big games this year, and he is fully capable of taking over on the offensive end. Nerlens Noel averages 10.4 points and 9.6 boards per game, but his biggest impact is on the defensive end. Noel already has 102 blocked shots this year. Opponents shoot just 37.8 percent from the floor against Kentucky’s defense.

Billy Donovan’s Florida team has beaten SEC opponents by an average of more than 20 points per game so far this year, so it was a big shock when they were run off the floor at Arkansas last week. The Gators got some bad news this past weekend when it was announced that forward Will Yeguete will be out for at least four weeks after having knee surgery. Yeguete is arguably the team’s best defensive player, and defense is the reason Florida is where they are right now. Other than Arkansas in the first half last week, no one this year has really been able to shoot the ball well at all against Florida this year. Opponents are scoring just 52.7 points per game against the Gators staunch defense.

Florida also has plenty of guys who can score. The Gators are led by the backcourt trio of Kenny Boynton, Mike Rosario, and Scottie Wilbekin. Patric Young is the team’s best post player, while forward Erik Murphy is a sharp shooter from outside. In fact, Murphy is hitting 50 percent of his shots from beyond the arc this year. Florida’s efficiency on the offensive end has been very impressive this season. The Gators shoot 49.4 percent from the floor as a team.

Free Pick: Over 135

Kentucky’s offense has improved of late, and Florida can really shot the ball from long range. I think the winner of this game will have to score quite a few points.

Florida 75 Kentucky 68
