The NHL betting season resumes Wednesday night when the Colorado Avalanche will host the Los Angeles Kings on NBC Sports Network at 10:00 p.m. ET on the ice inside the Pepsi Center. This is the first game for both teams since returning from the Olympic break.
The Kings stopped a four game losing skid back on February 6th as they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 in overtime. Losers in nine of its L/11 games, Los Angeles’ offense struggled to score any goals before going on the Olympic break. The Kings have scored just 13 goals in their L/10 games and been shut out three times in that stretch. Getting no help from the offense has been an unfortunate trend for G Jonathan Quick of late. Quick is now the unquestioned starter on this team that has the league’s No. 1 defense allowing just 2.1 goals per game. The boys from Hollywood started the season on fire at 25-8-4 SU as of December 21st, since then they have gone just 6-14-1 SU and dropped to third in the Pacific Division. To get back on track the Kings need to start scoring goals again. During their hot streak they scored three or more goals in 19 of those 37 games, in the 21 games since they have gotten three or more goals just five times and been shut out four times in that span.
The Avalanche won six of their L/10 games before heading to the break. They will have to keep winning to stay up with the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks that are ahead of them in a close Central Division race. Last time out, Colorado beat the New York Islanders 5-2 on the road. In that game, C Matt Duchene scored two goals in the second period to help give his team the win. Duchene has put up 50 points on 19 goals and 31 assists to lead the Avs offense this season. The offense has been great averaging 2.9 goals per game ranking them No. 6 in the NHL. The power play has also been solid making penalty kill units pay 19.0 percent of the time they draw an extra man advantage. The tandem of G Jean-Sebastien Giguere and G Seymon Varlamov have been solid in goal holding opposing teams to 2.6 goals per game for a defense that is middle of the pack in the league. When the Avs last saw the Kings they suffered a 3-2 shootout loss back on December 21st at the Staples Center.
The Kings are bound to break out of their current offensive woes at some point, but we really don’t believe they will do it on Wednesday. We think Colorado will be able to get a couple of goals and grab the victory on its home ice where it holds a record of 19-7-3 SU. Look for this to be a low scoring battle between two teams that play great defense, but the Avalanche will prevail victorious.
