Pointspread: New York -1.5
Total Line: 188.5
It is bad enough that New York has just three straight-up wins in its first 16 games and it has gone a costly 4-12 against the spread, but things may actually be getting worse after a 103-99 loss to New Orleans this past Sunday as a 1.5-point favorite extended the team’s current losing streak to nine games. The Knicks have gone 1-8 ATS during this slide and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games.
Without Tyson Chandler in the lineup, New York is ranked 26th in the NBA in scoring with 92.8 points and 26th in rebounds with 40.5 a game. The only bright spot in this whole mess is a defensive effort by the rest of the team that is holding opposing teams to 99.1 points a game, which is ranked 10th in the league. Carmelo Anthony continues to lead the team in scoring with 26.3 points a game while pulling down a team-high 9.9 rebounds and Raymond Felton is chipping in another 11 points and 5.8 assists.
Things do not get any better in Brooklyn with the Nets sporting a 5-13 SU record heading in this grudge match. They are coming off a 111-87 loss to Denver this past Tuesday night as 4.5-point home underdogs. It was there eighth loss in their last 10 games both SU and ATS. Brooklyn is 6-12 ATS overall and 2-5 ATS at home. The total has gone OVER in four of those seven home games.
Key injuries have crippled this team as well with Deron Williams, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry all out indefinitely. Brook Lopez is back in the starting lineup and averaging 19.3 points and 5.8 rebounds and Joe Johnson, who is the only player to start all 18 games, is scoring another 16 points. Overall, Brooklyn is averaging 95.3 points and 41.6 rebounds while holding teams to 102.8 points a game.
Free NBA Pick
The only good news in this matchup is that one of these teams is going to get a much needed win. The slight edge would have to go to the Nets on their home court but the free pick for Thursday night is the UNDER on the total line in what could be a very sloppy game from the opening tip to the final whistle.
New York vs. Brooklyn UNDER 188.5
