Point Spread: San Antonio -8.5
The Los Angeles Lakers beat San Antonio 91-86 back on April 14 as 3.5-point home underdogs with Kobe Bryant out of the lineup, but they sorely missed his presence this past Sunday in a 91-79 drubbing as 8.5-point road underdogs in Game 1 of this best-of-seven opening round playoff matchup.
Plagued by a slow start that led to a 24-15 first-quarter deficit, Los Angeles could never close the gap even with Dwight Howard scoring a team-high 20 points and Steve Nash and Paul Gasol combining for 32 more points. The game stayed well UNDER the 190.5 point line as the Lakers came nowhere close to matching their season scoring average of 102.2 points a game. It also did not help that they shot just 41.1 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range.
San Antonio came into this series with some serious question marks as well after going 3-6 straight-up and 2-7 against the spread in its final nine regular season games. The team had been plague by injuries on-and-off for most of the regular season, but looked impressive playing at full strength in Game 1. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili each scored 18 points while combining for 11 assists to go along with Tim Duncan’s 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Spurs also struggled shooting the ball this past Sunday, but a solid defensive effort was able to Los Angeles off balance for a good part of the game. Overall, San Antonio has been getting it done of both ends of the court with an offense that is ranked fourth in the NBA in scoring with an average of 103 points a game complementing a defense that is ranked 11th in points allowed; giving-up an average of 96.6 points a game.
Free NBA pick
The Lakers are well aware that Wednesday night’s game is basically a must-win to have any chance of advancing past the first round, but they have struggled mightily, even with Bryant in the lineup, to win on the road this season (16-26 SU and 15-26-1 ATS). In all likelihood they are going back to Los Angeles in that dreaded 0-2 hole, but the free NBA pick for this game is the Lakers and the 8.5 points as they will play well enough to cover.
San Antonio 95 Los Angeles 91
