NHL betting action continues here at Bang the Book with a clash of teams that have developed quite the rivalry over the course of the last decade or so, as the Tampa Bay Lightning pay a visit to Newark to take on the New Jersey Devils.
Tampa Bay hasn’t had all that much of a schedule yet this season, but it has figured out how to make the most of it by winning eight of its 11 games. However, the schedule is going to get a whole heck of a lot harder from here, and there is no doubt that the team is in for a fight starting on Tuesday night in the Garden State. As the case always seems to be with this team, the offense only goes as far as its top line takes it. C Steven Stamkos already has 17 points in 11 games this season, while RW Martin St. Louis has 14 points in that same time span. It’s not unreasonable to think that both are going to end up with at least 100 points by the time this season is over with, and the Stammer might ultimately figure out how to get to 50 goals for the second time in his career as well. The problem comes with the defense. G Ben Bishop is standing on his head at times, but there are just far too many shots that are making their way through to him at this point.
The Devils have come oh so close, but are yet so far away from taking their game to the next level. They have four losses that have already come in overtime, and three of those have come in shootouts. This was the case for the mass majority of last season, and that’s why New Jersey didn’t get into the second season last year. The team this year is void of far too much offensive talent at this point. RW Jaromir Jagr is about 425 years old, but he is the team leader in points with nine. No other forward has more than seven points. The other issue that the team has is that it really feels obligated to use G Martin Brodeur because of what he meant to the team and its history. Unfortunately, G Cory Schneider is clearly the better of these two goalies at the moment, and there is no denying that fact. Schneider has a 2.14 GAA. Brodeur is stuck at 3.32.
Keep an eye on who is in net in this one. We have a feeling that it is going to be Brodeur, and if that turns out to be the case, we definitely like the Bolts. Go with the visitors to pick up their fourth straight win on Tuesday night.
