Two of the teams that were favored to win the Western Conference at the outset of the year are going to meet in the first round of the playoffs starting on Sunday afternoon, as NBA betting fans are looking forward to sinking their teeth into the clash between the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs.
This is where the rubber is really going to meet the road for the Lake Show. They had to expend a ton of energy just to get into the playoffs, and now, they are going to be facing one of the most savvy teams in the league right off the bat in the first round. G Kobe Bryant is, of course, out for the season, and that is really putting a lot of the onus onto some of the other stars of this team. The truth of the matter is that there are a lot of men that are being brought together here that have historically played the roles of the best players on their team, but it is really tremendously unknown as to whether C Dwight Howard and F Pau Gasol can really work together or whether G Steve Nash is even going to be healthy enough to really play in this series. The Lakers did win their final five games to get into the playoffs, but we have to remember that four of those five did come at Staples Center, and the lone road game was against the Portland Trail Blazers, who clearly gave up on the season over a month ago.
Of course, San Antonio really isn’t in great form right now either. The team gave up its quest of capturing the top seed in the Western Conference after losing to these Lakers back on April 14th 91-86 at Staples Center in a game that very well could have been had. All of the stars rested over the course of the last two games of the regular season after that, but the truth of the matter is that the Spurs have still gone just 3-7 SU and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games, including failing to cover seven in a row. Most of the troubles have come on the road, but even games like a two-point home win against the Atlanta Hawks and a two-point home loss against the Miami Heat without all of their stars sitting really make us wonder whether these Spurs have the goods to win in the playoffs.
We do think that the oddsmakers have gotten this one right, though. The Lakers aren’t a great team without Kobe in the fold, and that game at the Staples Center a week ago was won thanks to raw emotion and desperation. Head Coach Gregg Popovich has been readying his team for this very situation for the last several weeks, and the time is here for him and his team to really shine. The Spurs should romp in Game 1. San Antonio 113 – Los Angeles 96
