NCAA Basketball Pick – February 9th
A pair of teams that are going to be dancing out of the Big East are going to meet in one of the best college basketball betting battles on Saturday. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play host to the Louisville Cardinals.
There was clearly something wrong with the Cardinals two weeks ago, but the hope has to be there that wins over the Marquette Golden Eagles and Rutgers Scarlet Knights by 19 and 20 points respectively have to get this team back to where it was as one of the top clubs in the land a few weeks ago. This is really the only brutally tough game on the schedule for the rest of the month of February, and it isn’t impossible to think that Louisville could get back on the top line for the NCAA Tournament with five more successive wins to end the month. The woes really seem to be on the offensive end of the court. It wasn’t all that long ago that G Russ Smith was averaging 20 points per game, and it feels odd that no one else on the club is putting up more than 10.6 points per game aside from Smith. That being said, this is still a dominating defensive team when it gets going, and with C Gorgui Dieng continually harassing big men when they enter the paint, it’s tough to go against this team.
Notre Dame is back at home where it has failed to cover four straight games. The Irish were crushed by the Syracuse Orange on Monday, and now they have to face a very similar Louisville team here at home. That clearly doesn’t bode well for the boys from South Bend, as their offense was really stymied by that 2-3 zone that the ‘Cuse sent their way. The matchup to watch is the one between Dieng and F Jack Cooley in the paint. Cooley is the team’s leading scorer at 14.8 points per game, and he is averaging a double-double per night with 11.3 boards per game as well. He had a nice game against Syracuse with 10 points and 11 boards, but G Eric Atkins and G Jerian Grant didn’t do a heck of a lot, and the rest of the team was nowhere to be found.
The Fighting Irish aren’t the better of these two teams, and it’s going to show on Saturday night. We really think that the Cards are going to come to town and shut down this offense by taking away all of the ancillary scorers, which will make life really difficult on Cooley to lead the way against arguably one of the best defensive players in the entire country. Lay the short point spread with the Cards this weekend. Louisville 68 – Notre Dame 62
