Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has confirmed that star striker Carlos Tevez will miss his side’s FA Cup semi-final against arch rivals Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday.
The Argentine striker picked up a hamstring injury in City’s 3-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, and Mancini now faces up to a month without his side’s top goalscorer.
Speaking with the press ahead of Saturday’s game the Italian said: “Tevez is not available for Saturday. I think he will recover in three or four weeks. It is a big problem but we can’t take any risks.”
Despite the City captain’s absence on Saturday Mancini is hopeful the hitman can play a part in a successful end of season run-in, and stated: “It’s a big problem in this moment but we can’t take any risk because after this we have six games in the league and, hopefully, a Cup final. My hope is that we have him back fit for the last couple of games in the league or the [FA Cup] final.”
Mancini will surely go with either Mario Balotelli or Edin Dzeko as Carlitos’ replacement, but the City coach has stated he has not selected which one to play yet.
“I don’t yet know my starting XI. We have 48 hours still to decide. Every player knows this is an important match for the club. I trust all my players. We can reach the final if we play well and I’m sure every player, whoever I pick, will give 100% on Saturday.
“Whether Edin [Dzeko] or Mario [Balotelli] play… I don’t know. They both have a chance.”
It has been a long wait for City fans since their last FA Cup triumph in 1969, and the winners of the Manchester clash will take on either Bolton or Stoke in the final.
