College Football Betting Favorite: Florida State -14.5
Maryland has swept through their schedule with ease so far this year. The Terrapins have been one of the biggest surprises in football, but their quest to remain unbeaten gets much harder this week at Doak Walker Stadium in Tallahassee. Florida State is a top ten team, and the Seminoles are loaded with talent and depth. This one should be a good measuring stick to see where both programs are at this point in the season.
The Maryland Terrapins are 4-0 overall, and they are also 4-0 ATS so far this season. How good has Maryland been? The Terrapins have beaten the spread by at least six points in each of their first four contests this year. Randy Edsall’s team had to put up with more injuries than anyone last year, and now that they are healthy this team is showing what they can do. The Maryland defense has been elite this season. The Terrapins are giving up just 10.2 points per game, which is third best in the nation. They are giving up just 266 yards per game in 2013.
The Maryland offense is led by quarterback C.J. Brown who is completing 2/3 of his passes so far this year. Brown has thrown 7 touchdowns and just one interception. Brown also averages more than five yards per carry. Deon Long and Stefon Diggs have turned into a nice one-two punch at the wide receiver spot for Maryland. Diggs is averaging 22 yards per reception. Maryland is averaging 39.8 points per game so far in 2013. This offense will face a big challenge in the Seminoles defense this weekend.
The Seminoles got a little bit more of a challenge than expected last week from Boston College. Florida State did win the game by two touchdowns, but this young team didn’t appear ready early on. I would expect them to be ready from the get go in this one. Jameis Winston has been electrifying in his first four games with the Seminoles. Winston is a freshman, but he doesn’t look one on the field. Winston has thrown 12 touchdowns and just two picks. He is completing just above 73% of his passes. Florida State has found a real star at the quarterback spot. Florida State’s offense is well-balanced, and the team is averaging an amazing 51.2 points per game through four contests.
Though the offense has been great so far this season, the Seminoles defense is still the real strength of this team. Florida State is stacked with all kinds of strength and speed on this side of the ball. The defensive front has been overwhelming everyone they have gone up against this year. Florida State is giving up just 136 passing yards per game this season. The secondary is very talented, and opposing quarterbacks have very little time to throw the ball. Overall, opponents are averaging 15 points per game.
Free Pick: Maryland +15.5
The Terrapins are a solid team, and getting more than two touchdowns I have to take the underdog in this one. Expect the Seminoles to win, but the Terrapins are a covering machine.
