Point Spread: Clippers -5.5
The Los Angeles Clippers took the opening game of their first round series against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night to take the 1-0 series lead. They can sweep the mini-series if they can get the job done on Monday night at Staples Center.
The Grizzlies know that they are going to have to play better defense in this series in the half court than they did on Saturday night if they are going to have a shot in this one. They only allowed five fast break buckets, which wasn’t the problem. In the half court though, the team was atrocious. LA shot 41-of-74 from the field, including shooting over 50% in possessions that were in half court sets. That’s not going to cut it for a team that generally holds teams in the low-40s in shooting percentage. On the other side of the court, it is clear that the team is going to have to rebound the basketball better as well. Getting just 23 rebounds in a game isn’t going to cut it, and when the only player that has more than four boards in the game is F Ed Davis, there are some real problems. G Jerryd Bayless was really the only player that had a sense of what was going on that overachieved in the lineup, as he scored 19 points off of the bench.
The Clips meanwhile, had three great quarters and one suspect quarter offensively in the Game 1 win, and considering how strong the Grizzlies play on the defensive side of the ball, that’s certainly not bad at all. Seven different players scored in double figures, which really didn’t make for all that many stars to shine, but it was truly a complete team effort on a day when F Blake Griffin battled foul trouble and only scored a total of 10 points before fouling out. G Chris Paul scored 23 points and dished out seven assists to lead the way for Lob City, while his backcourt mate, G Chauncey Billups scored 14 in a game in which he played 22 minutes. It was good to see Billups back out there and playing effectively, knowing that he has missed just a slew of games this year due to injury. The Clippers shot 55.4% from the floor and pulled down 47 rebounds, 14 of which came on the offense end of the court. Second chance points were tremendously in favor of the Clippers, and the team scored 46 points in the paint to boot.
We thought that the ‘under’ was the right play in Game 1, and based upon the fact that neither team even took 75 shots in that game, we are standing by that in Game 2. There’s no way that LA is going to shoot beyond 50% from the floor once again in this one, and if that turns out to be the case, this is going to be a game that is played in the 170s at best. Los Angeles 90 – Memphis 84
