The Mets just had a disastrous series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in which they were beaten in three out of four, including as -210 favorites with RHP Matt Harvey on the mound on Sunday. The offense has just been terrible for New York, scoring a total of just 14 runs in total in its last six games. There’s not a heck of a lot of hope on Monday either with RHP Jeremy Hefner on the hill. We’re actually a bit surprised that Hefner still even has a spot on the team now that he is 0-4 and the team 0-6 in his six starts this season. Of course, the rest of the splits for Hefner don’t suggest that he should be in this bad of shape. He has a 25/12 K/BB ratio, and his 4.63 ERA isn’t the worst in the world. Over the course of these last three starts, Hefner has allowed just a total of seven runs in 21 innings, yet he is a very hard luck 0-2 to show for his work in those games.
St. Louis is 9-2 in its last 11 games, and it has streaked all the way to the top of the NL Central. Manager Mike Matheny should be proud of his starting pitching staff and his bats for picking up the slack for his cruddy bullpen, which still ranks second to last in baseball at 5.28. The bullpen wasn’t needed in two of the three games against the Colorado Rockies, as both RHP Adam Wainwright and RHP Shelby Miller pitched complete game shutouts. Now, it’s up to RHP Lance Lynn to try to do the same against the Mets in this game. Lynn has great numbers this year, and he is 5-1 to show for it. The prospective All-Star has pitched exactly seven innings in four straight starts, and he has allowed an average of just one run per game in that stretch. Fatigue might become an issue for the righty, knowing that he has thrown at least 101 pitches in four straight starts, but if he can keep the ball in the zone in this one, he should ultimately be in fine shape.
It’s tough to go against the Cards in this one, but we think that the percentages on the Mets are great. Remember that Lynn almost certainly won’t go the distance, and if you just look at the raw numbers, that should give New York at least a run of a head start in this game. Go with the Mets at the big time price on Monday night.
