After a disappointing loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, the Nebraska Cornhuskers will have to regroup quickly as they host the menacing Minnesota Golden Gophers this weekend.

The Golden Gophers are a formidable opponent in the Big Ten.  They have seven wins on the season and they almost pulled off the upset against the top ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Despite trailing by 17 points at one point during the game, the Gophers had a chance to tie it up but failed to recover an onside kick late in the game. Although they lost it showed that this team has no quit in them as the season comes to an end.

All is not lost for the Gophers as they can still win the Big Ten West and set up a rematch with the Buckeyes if they can get past the Cornhuskers and the Badgers to end the season. They will focus on the first game against the Cornhuskers and you can expect a heavy dose of David Cobb when they meet on the field.

In the game against the Buckeyes, Cobb rushed for 27 times and 145 yards. This included three touchdowns which is the stat to watch because Minnesota is 9-1 in Cobb’s career when he rushes for a touchdown. That is very likely to happen if the Huskers run defense is not in better shape after getting shredded in the last outing.

Nebraska was never in the last game against the Badgers. Running back Melvin Gordon torched this defense in record setting fashion. Gordon rushed for a major college-record 408 yards and four touchdowns and did not even take the field in the fourth quarter since the game was well out of reach.

Nebraska’s own running back star Ameer Abdullah was stymied in his first game back since an injury. He only managed to get 69 yards on 18 carries against the Badgers, a number that will have to improve if they want to put up points against Minnesota.

This loss is very demoralizing for the Huskers. They no longer hold control of the West and are unlikely to play in the conference championship, which essentially eliminated any outside chance of making the college football playoffs. Coach Bo Pelini failed to adjust in the game against the Badgers and was completely out coached. Now he has the tough task of getting his team ready for Minnesota.

This game is still important for both teams, but it seems like the Cornhuskers could still be feeling the effects of the last loss against the Badgers.
