The first true Cinderella matchup of the 2013 NCAA Tournament will take place in the third round of the West Region on Sunday when the 12th-seeded Ole Miss Rebels (27-8 straight-up, 18-12 against the spread) face the 13th-seeded La Salle Explorers (23-9 SU, 14-12-2 ATS) at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The Rebels became the third No. 12 seed in as many games to upset a No. 5, taking out Wisconsin 57-46 as 6-point underdogs. The Explorers also won their second straight game in the Big Dance 63-61 against Kansas State as 6-point dogs despite blowing a 44-26 halftime lead.
La Salle had beaten Boise State in the First Four on Wednesday 80-71 and has now won two games in the same NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1955. The Explorers got a career-high 21 points from Jerrell Wright, who was 6-for-6 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Free throws were a huge factor late in this latest game against the Wildcats, as the team converted 14-of-16 from the charity stripe and missed 15-of-18 shots from the field in the second half. La Salle had made 7-of-12 free-throw attempts in the win over Boise State, doing a lot of damage from beyond the arc with 10 3-pointers. The Explorers made seven 3-pointers vs. Kansas State.
Earlier in the day, Ole Miss relied on guard Marshall Henderson to play better after a dismal start and take over in the second half en route to a second-round victory against Wisconsin. Henderson scored 17 of his 19 points after the intermission in leading the Rebels back from a 25-22 deficit at halftime.
However, things began poorly for the transfer who is playing at his third different school in three years. Henderson opened the game by going 1-for-13 from the field but scored 13 points during a decisive 20-8 run that gave his team a 50-44 lead with less than three minutes remaining. The Badgers also helped Mississippi’s cause greatly by shooting only 25 percent from the field (15-of-59) as a team.
The Rebels are suddenly one of the hottest teams in the field, winning six straight games and eight of nine with a 7-2 ATS mark during that stretch. They have the confidence of beating two great defensive teams (Wisconsin and Florida) in consecutive games, limiting their opponents to an average of 58 points per game over their past five with the UNDER cashing each time.
While La Salle has played very well lately as well, the grind of playing its third game in five days should finally catch up to this team. Time must run out on one of these Cinderallas, and I’m betting it will be the Explorers…
