The #9 seed vs. the #8 seed is almost always a great game in the NCAA Tournament, and this one should keep that tradition going. Missouri was knocked out in the first game by #15 seed Norfolk State last year. The Tigers didn’t have nearly as good of a regular season this year, and they’ll face a dangerous Colorado State team in this one.

Game Overview:

The Missouri Tigers were 17-0 at home this year, and only 2-8 on the road. They’ll have to find a way to win away from home in March. Missouri is led by sensational point guard Phil (Flip) Pressey. Pressey is one of the best passers in the country, and he is great at setting up his teammates for wide open looks. The one problem he has had this year has been his decision making at the end of the game. Pressey has turned the ball over or taken bad shots that have cost the team the game in late game situations several times.

Missouri has six guys who average double figures in scoring, so team depth is a huge plus for the Tigers. Laurence Bowers and Alex Oriakhi form a strong frontcourt that rebounds the ball well and scores in the low post with consistency. Keion Bell and Jabari Brown join Pressey as outside scorers for the Tigers. Missouri is most comfortable playing a fast-paced game, though they don’t press very often like they used to with Mike Anderson as their coach. The Tigers won a lot of games by huge spreads, but lost most of their close games this year.

Colorado State is a team I’ve been watching closely all year. The Rams had a really successful season in a very difficult Mountain West Conference. Colorado State led the nation in rebounding, and the Rams were well-balanced on both ends of the floor. Like Missouri, Colorado State had some trouble winning away from home. The Rams were 6-6 on the road, but they did go 3-1 on neutral courts. Larry Eustachy’s team was probably underseeded a bit at number eight, and they drew a tough matchup in Missouri.

The Rams are led on the inside by Minnesota-transfer Colton Iverson. Iverson is shooting 60% from the floor this year, and he averages 9.8 rebounds per game. Pierce Hornung and Greg Smith join him to form one of the best frontcourts in the nation. Hornung is an amazing offensive rebounder. Smith has a versatile offensive game due to his athleticism and quickness. Dorian Green has had an ankle injury, but he is listed as probable for this one. He and Wes Eikmeyer are the team’s best scorers from the outside.

Free Pick:

Both of these teams are far more talented than a normal #9 or #8 seed. This game should be a lot of fun to watch. The Rams played in a much more difficult conference, so I’ll take them and the points here.

Colorado State 71 Missouri 70
