Neither the Auburn Tigers nor the Missouri Tigers even figured to get to bowl games this season. Alas, they are the last two teams standing in the crowded SEC, and the winner of this duel in the SEC Championship Game will have every right in the world to challenge for the BCS National Championship.
Mizzou is sort of the forgotten team right now with just one loss, and it really isn’t fair to think that. The Tigers had a good loss, dropping to the South Carolina Gamecocks at home in overtime in a game in which QB James Franklin wasn’t playing in. That’s the only blemish on their record, and the only other issue that they have is the fact that they didn’t playing against Alabama or Auburn in the regular season. It’s not like that win against the Georgia Bulldogs or the Texas A&M Aggies should be diminished any, and playing against the Toledo Rockets and Indiana Hoosiers isn’t the worst non-conference slate in the world. The bottom line is that Head Coach Gary Pinkel and the gang should have every argument in the world to play for the National Championship if they win this game, but they probably aren’t going to do so regardless of what else happens unless both the Florida State Seminoles and the Ohio State Buckeyes lose this week. Franklin is back, and he has led this team to at least 24 points in every game played this season, something that is no small feat in the SEC, and though this defense is allowing 384.6 yards per game, it is only conceding 19.4 points per game as well.
Auburn likes to say that it has a team of destiny this year. The bottom line though, is that the game against Georgia should have been lost, the game against the LSU Tigers wasn’t really all that competitive, and for our money, though the game was close and reasonably could have gone either way, the Alabama Crimson Tide were the better for our money last Saturday in spite of the second “Prayer at Jordan Hare.” However, what shouldn’t be lost in all of this is that Head Coach Gus Malzahn is amazing. He was the genius behind the Auburn National Championship a few seasons ago, and he was the one who got the Arkansas State Red Wolves to the top of the Sun Belt in just one year. He took over a program that was a disaster and turned it into a winning team right away, largely thanks to bringing in QB Nick Marshall from JUCO. But regardless, this team rushed for nearly 300 yards on Alabama, and there is no doubt that it is one of the most feared offenses in the entire country.
We, as a nation full of football fans, tend to overreact to what we have just seen. Auburn isn’t the top team in the country, yet a few gave it first place votes. The team is good, and it very well could win the SEC this year. However, we still think that Missouri is being overlooked and overlooked in a big time way. The Tigers from Columbia will have more bite on Sunday, and we think they’ll roll into the Sugar Bowl and have the best claim to being screwed over in the chase for the BCS National Championship.
