The Missouri Tigers are 5-0 heading into this big contest. Missouri limped through their first season in the SEC last year, but they are healthy and looking impressive early on in 2013. Georgia isn’t very healthy, but the Bulldogs are 4-1 with some impressive wins. This is going to be a good measuring stick for both teams. Are the Tigers for real? Can Georgia keep their SEC and national title hopes alive?
James Franklin is the guy who makes this Missouri offense go. Franklin is a dual-threat quarterback who is just as comfortable throwing it as he is running it. Last season Franklin missed several games and was dinged up the rest of the season. This year, Franklin is completely healthy and he is dominating. He is completing 68% of his passes, and he is averaging 5.2 yards per carry on the season. Henry Josey is the team’s shiftiest runner, and he was out all of last year. Josey is back and averaging 5.7 yards per carry this year. Russell Hansbrough is the team’s leading rusher, and he is racking up 7.9 yards per carry. Missouri ranks seventh in the nation in total offense so far this season.
Defensively, the Tigers have been very good against the run. Missouri is giving up just 118.6 yards per game on the ground, good for 26th best in the country. The secondary has been a bit of a problem though, and they will get tested in a big way this Saturday against Aaron Murray and the Bulldogs. Missouri is allowing 291.8 yards per game through the air so far in 2013.
Georgia’s injury report is about as long as anyone’s in college football right now. The Bulldogs nearly lost last week in Knoxville, but they escaped with an overtime victory over the Volunteers. Georgia lost earlier this year at Clemson, but all of their preseason goals are still attainable as long as they keep winning in the SEC. Before the season, this game wouldn’t have been seen as a big test, but Missouri has been playing extremely well. Georgia will have to get their passing attack going and put up some big points against Missouri to have the upper hand in this one.
Aaron Murray is having a terrific senior season. Murray has already thrown for 1,534 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has thrown only three interceptions. Todd Gurley is the team’s top runner, but he is listed as doubtful for Saturday. Keith Marshall is a great backup, but he is out for the year with a knee injury. The team will be suffering a bit hit if neither of those guys are able to go this weekend. Georgia’s defense is giving up 32.6 points per game this year. The inexperience of this defense has really made them susceptible to big plays. They’ll have to be solid this weekend against a Tigers offense that is capable of big things.
Free Pick: Missouri +8
Missouri might not be able to win this game, but giving this good of a team more than a touchdown is too much for me to pass up. Grab the points here.
