The Missouri Tigers are two wins away from playing in the SEC Championship Game. The first of those tasks won’t be easy to pass, as they are taking on the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford in one of the best games of the day on the college football betting lines on Saturday.
The Tigers have been a heck of a story this year. They came out of nowhere to storm into the Top 10 in the land, and then a heartbreaking loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks ripped their National Championship dreams away from them. They lost QB James Franklin for a few weeks, but he is back now, and so too are the title hopes. It’s still going to take some help to get the job done, but both the Stanford Cardinal and Oregon Ducks losing in the last two weeks have helped quite a bit. Winning the SEC and beating a 12-0 #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide team could conceivably put the BCS title back into play. For now, Mizzou is trying to prove that it is worthy of being in a BCS bowl game, and its competition is clearly teams like the South Carolina Gamecocks, Texas A&M Aggies, and Auburn Tigers. Winning these last two we have to think will get the job done, though. Franklin is expected to be back in this one, though you wouldn’t know that there were any issues with QB Maty Mauk running the show in Columbia. Franklin has thrown for 1,576 yards and rushed for 290 more, and he has accounted for a total of 17 TDs on the season.
Life in the SEC is tough, and the Rebs have once again found that out the hard way. They have lost three times this year, but those three games came against Alabama, Auburn, and Texas A&M. Heck, Ole Miss even has a win over the LSU Tigers to its credit, and that’s a game that most tabbed as a loss. As a result, the best that can be done is a New Year’s Day bowl game for the Rebels, and that won’t include the BCS games. What we have seen as the season has worn on though, is that the freshman class that was so highly touted by Head Coach Hugh Freeze has gotten more and more cohesive. Yes, the schedule has gotten easier as well, but we don’t think it is a mistake that this team is 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in its last four games. Three rushers all have at least 390 yards on the ground, and four receivers each have at least 477 yards. QB Bo Wallace is the general of it all, and though he isn’t amongst the freshmen, he is still just a sophomore and is clearly the heart and soul of this team.
The Tigers just aren’t the better of these teams as we see it, and we think that this is a situation where the wrong team is favored just because of some silly ranking. Ole Miss is amongst the best 25 teams in America as we see it, and it is going to prove it by derailing Missouri once and for all on Saturday night.
