The National League comes into the Mid-Summer Classic with a two-game winning streak after losing to the AL 12 of the last 13 years before this mini-run. The only non-losing year during that stretch was the infamous 7-7 tie in the 2002 All-Star Game in Milwaukee. As a direct result of that game, MLB decided to award the league that wins the All-Star Game home-field advantage in the World Series, so there is much more than bragging rights on the line this Tuesday night.
NL skipper Tony La Russa is expected to go with San Francisco right-hander Matt Cain as his starter for this game. While he grabbed much of the attention for his perfect game against Houston last month, Cain is well deserving of the honor with a 9-3 record and 2.62 ERA in 17 outings this season. Some of the other starters on the NL roster include the Mets’ RA Dickey, who is having a monster year at 12-1 with a 2.40 ERA and Washington sensation Stephen Strasburg, who is 9-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 17 previous appearances.
The American League will look to get back to its winning ways with a lineup that is loaded with some lumber. Josh Hamilton from Texas gets the start as does the Yankees’ Robinson Cano, who is the Captain of the AL Home Run Derby team, and Toronto’s Jose Batista, who is tied with Hamilton for the most home runs in the league so far at 27.
Rangers’ skipper Ron Washington has stated that he is going with Justin Verlander as his starter for Tuesday night. Last season’s AL CY Young and MVP winner is having another solid season with a 9-5 record overall and an ERA of 2.58 in 18 previous starts. Some of the other top AL arms to keep an eye on in this game are the Angels’ Jered Weaver, David Price with Tampa Bay, and CJ Wilson from Texas as a replacement for the injured CC Sabathia.
This game has been a lower scoring affair than usual in the last six years with the total runs going over eight just once during that span. That will not be the case on Tuesday night has both sides bats light-up the scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. AL All-Stars 7 NL All-Stars 5
