With last night’s win, the Boston Red Sox are back to .500 on the season. The Red Sox started 4-10, but they have won 7 of their last 8 games. Oakland isn’t expected to do much this year, but they have stayed around .500 so far this year. It will be a battle of two young pitchers Tuesday night at Fenway Park in Boston.
Jarrod Parker has been a highly rated prospect for several years, and Oakland decided now is the time for him to show his stuff in the majors. Parker has started two games in his young career, and he has allowed just one run in 12 innings of work. Parker’s fastball has tons of movement on it, and it is tough for hitters to get a clean swing. Oakland ranks ninth in the majors in team ERA at 3.41.
The Athletics issue the last couple years has been their inability to score runs. Those issues haven’t improved any so far in 2012. The Athletics are dead last in team batting average at .209. The team is second to last in all of baseball in runs scored per game at just 3.04 runs per contest. Former Red Sox player Josh Reddick actually leads the team in batting average, but he is only hitting a mediocre .277. Yoenis Cespedes has tons of power, and he has already racked up 19 RBI’s this year.
Boston’s offense has been dominating over the last ten games. The Red Sox have scored nine runs or more six times in the past 10 days. Everyone has been chipping in, but David Ortiz has been the team’s leader offensively so far this season. He leads the team in every major offensive category. Ortiz is hitting .405 with six home runs and 20 RBI’s. Huge contributions from Mike Aviles and Cody Ross have really helped this offense. They needed someone to step up without Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury, and both of these guys are having a tremendous start to the season. Boston leads the majors in runs scored per game at 5.74.
Boston’s pitching staff has struggled mightily this year. The Red Sox have a team ERA of 5.54, which is second worst in all of baseball. Injuries have forced Felix Doubront into the starting rotation, but he has actually been the team’s best starter so far this year. Doubront isn’t overpowering, but he has a decent 4.09 ERA in 22 innings this season.
The Athletics are 1-6 in their last 7 meetings with the Red Sox. Boston is just 4-5 at home so far this year. The over is an impressive 12-1-1 in the last 14 meetings between these two teams. Look for plenty of runs once again in this matchup.
