Tonight marks the first of four battles between the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park in a showdown of the two best teams in the National League. The first pitch is set for 10:15 p.m. (ET) and the game will be available on MLB TV.
These two met the other week in Philadelphia with the Giants taking two out of three. The Phillies responded with a six-game winning streak with sweeps of the Pirates and the Rockies. They are now a league-best 71-39 on the year and have an eight-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East. Philadelphia is 41-18 at home and 30-21 on the road.
The bats have come to life for the Phillies aided by the addition of Hunter Pence to the lineup. He has six hits and three RBI in his first five games with the team. Cliff Lee is scheduled to be on the mound tonight. He has been a bit sporadic lately; giving up 11 earned runs in his last three starts to go along with 22 strike outs. Overall, Lee is 10-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 22 starts. Lifetime against the Giants, he is 3-0 with an ERA of 1.13.
San Francisco snapped a five game losing streak with an 8-1 romp over Arizona as a 156 home favorite on Wednesday afternoon. The win put the Giants a game ahead of the Diamondbacks in the NL West and raised their record to 62-49 overall. They are 29-29 on the road and 33-20 at home.
The eight runs scored in San Francisco’s last game was a welcomed relief after it managed just 24 total runs in its previous 12 games. Fortunately for the Giants, their pitching continues to carry this team with an ERA of 3.16, which is second-best in the Majors.
Madison Bumgarner is expected to get the start for San Francisco tonight. The left-hander is 6-10 this season with a 3.80 ERA in 22 previous starts. He has been solid over his past four starts; giving up a total of 10 earned runs in his last 25.2 innings pitched.
After losing their last two to the Giants at home, stick with the Phillies to grab the early edge in this series with a win in Game 1 on the road.
