MLB Betting: Yankees vs White Sox
The New York Yankees gained a game on the Boston Red Sox with a win Monday night, while the Chicago White Sox continued to have problems plating runs and making up ground in their division. Tuesday night the Yanks and the other Sox play game two of their four-game series at The Cell in Chicago (8:10 pm Eastern).
New York won the opener of this series Monday night 3-2 as CC Sabathia scattered 10 hits over eight innings in earning his 16th victory of the season. The Yankees have taken three of five games from Chicago so far this season, and four of those five games have played under their posted totals.
So the Yanks, winners of four in a row and seven of their last nine, trail Boston by just a game in the AL East.
Meanwhile the White Sox, who have lost three games in a row, sit in third place in the AL Central, 4.5 games back of first-place Detroit.
Phil Hughes (1-3, 8.24) is slated to start for the Yanks Tuesday night against lefty John Danks (4-8, 3.79) for the Sox. As of early Tuesday morning BetOnline.com is listing Chicago and Danks as -110 favorites, with an over/under of nine.
Hughes, who won 18 games last year, has suffered from arm fatigue this year, and seen limited action. But while his overall numbers are not great, he’s got three quality starts in his last four outings. New York is 3-4 in Hughes’ starts this season, with the over/unders going 5-2.
Hughes made one start vs. the White Sox last year, and held them scoreless on four hits in seven innings of work.
After a lousy start to this season Danks has been great lately, stringing together five quality starts in a row. Since coming off the DL two weeks ago Danks has allowed just one ER on 11 hits in 13 IP. Chicago is only 6-11 in Danks’ starts this year, but the O/Us are 5-12.
Danks started twice vs. the Yankees last year, and got clipped for 10 ER on 12 hits in 9 1/3 IP.
On the injury front Yankees SS Derek Jeter and White Sox slugger Paul Konerko both missed Monday’s game after getting hit by pitchers Sunday. Jeter should be back in the lineup Tuesday, but Konerko is likely to be out a few more days. Which is not good news for a Sox offense that has scored a total of 12 runs over its last five games.
Over/unders are 45-54 in Yankees games this season, 41-59 in White Sox games and 20-28 in games played at US Cellular Field.
As for Tuesday’s game while Danks has been very tough lately the Yankees are a ML-best 23-9 in games in which opponents have started lefties this season. And Chicago has been having serious problems scoring runs. So we’ll go with New York to take game two of this series, and the under looks like a play, too.
