MLB Pick: Cincinnati Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Cincinnati Reds (34-33) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (31-36) MLB Betting Lines

Moneyline: Dodgers (-125) Reds (+115)

Over/Under: 6.5

Starting Pitchers: Reds (Cueto) vs. Dodgers (Kershaw)

The Cincinnati Reds split a four-game series with the Giants, and now they are in Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers. The Dodgers took two out of three in Cincinnati just a few days ago. Both teams will have their best pitcher from 2011 going in this one, so this should be a good midweek matchup.

Johnny Cueto has easily been the Reds best pitcher this year. Cueto spent quite a bit of time on the disabled list at the beginning of the year, but he has a stellar 1.93 ERA in his seven starts in 2011. Cincinnati’s offense is extremely potent, but they have been a bit inconsistent this year. The struggles of Jonny Gomes, Scott Rolen, and Paul Janish have held this team back offensively. Joey Votto won the National League MVP award last year, and he is having another great year. Votto is hitting .335 with nine homers and 42 runs batted in. Jay Bruce started the season slowly, but it is looking 2011 will be his breakout season. Bruce has been crushing the baseball of late. Bruce is hitting .290 and he leads the team with 17 homers and 48 runs batted in. The Reds are very good defensively, but they need some better pitching performances going forward.

Clayton Kershaw is a great young pitcher, but he has struggled mightily in his last two starts. Kershaw has allowed six earned runs in each of his last two starts. One of those starts was against this Reds team. The Dodgers are slowly getting healthier, but they are still without Rafael Furcal. Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier form a terrific offensive tandem in the middle of the order for the Dodgers, but Los Angeles doesn’t get a lot of production from the bottom of their order. Kemp already has 20 home runs this season, which means he has to hit just nine more to set a career high in homers. The Dodgers need to get some better production out of guys like James Loney and Juan Uribe. The Dodgers are very good defensively as well, but they are lacking in depth in the bullpen.

The over/under is set very low here, but I still think the under is the play. Both pitchers are fully capable of shutting down the opposing offense.
