New York Yankees (39-29) vs. Chicago Cubs (29-40) MLB Betting Lines
Moneyline: Yankees (-130) Cubs (+120)
Starting Pitchers: Yankees (Burnett) vs. Cubs (Dempster)
Not many people would have expected a pitcher’s duel when Freddy Garcia and Doug Davis met yesterday in the first game of this series, but that is exactly what we saw. The Cubs got the best of the Yankees by a score of 3-1. Saturday it will be Burnett vs. Dempster in a matchup of two pitchers that have been inconsistent over the last year or so.
A.J. Burnett had an extremely disappointing season in 2010, but he has been much better thus far in 2011. Burnett is 6-5 with a 4.09 ERA this year. The Yankees lose a bat because of the National League rules in this Interleague series. Jorge Posada has been swinging the bat well, but there simply isn’t a place to put him without the DH spot. The Yankees have gone two straight games without hitting a home run, which is quite surprising given that they have hit 103 home runs already this year. It is unlikely the Yankees will go another game without hitting a home run. Granderson and Teixeira are tied with 21 home runs so far this year, which is tops in the majors.
The Chicago Cubs have won four of their last five games, and they have done that against the Brewers and the Yankees. The Cubs have been able to come up with some big hits with runners in scoring position over the last few days, which is something they hadn’t done much at all in the first couple months of the season. While the hitting hasn’t been clutch, it has been the lack of pitching and defense that has really been the undoing of the Cubs. Chicago currently ranks 30th in the majors in team ERA and quality starts. They have also racked up 57 errors in just 69 games. Starlin Castro continues to be a bright spot for this team, but Darwin Barney and Marlon Byrd are on the disabled list.
The Yankees have a much stronger lineup than the Cubs do, and I think the price is fair in this one. I expect New York to bounce back with a win here.
