MLB Pick: Padres vs. Marlins

San Diego Padres (43-55) vs. Florida Marlins (47-51) MLB Betting Lines

Moneyline: Marlins (-155) Padres (+145)

Over/Under: 8

Starting Pitchers: Padres (Moseley) vs. Marlins (Vazquez)

Where did last night’s offensive explosion come from? The San Diego Padres rank last in several major offensive categories, but they put up 13 runs in the first two innings last night in Florida. The Padres put up four in the first and nine runs in the second inning. The Padres went on to demolish the Marlins 14-3. Before that game, Florida had won 9 of their last 11 games. There isn’t a streakier team in the majors than the Marlins. The Padres have taken the first two games of this series, but can the Marlins at least salvage a win in the series finale?

San Diego is still only 3-8 in their last 11 games, but it seems they have come to just the right spot to pick up some wins. The Padres are 6-0 in their last 6 meetings with the Marlins in Florida. The Padres are good in only one offensive category and that is stolen bases. San Diego has 100 stolen bases, more than any other team in the majors. On the other hand, the Padres are last in the majors in home runs. San Diego has a team batting average of just .233. The pitching staff has kept them in games, and the Padres team ERA is fourth best in the majors at 3.20.

The Florida Marlins have been on a season-long roller coaster ride. Florida was red hot at the beginning of the year, then they became the coldest team in the league, but now they are playing good baseball again. Jack McKeon seems to be getting respect from all the players, and that has made a big difference in their effort on the field. Hanley Ramirez is the star of this team, but he hasn’t played like a star this year. Ramirez is hitting just .253 with ten home runs. Mike Stanton continues to show his amazing power, but he is hitting just .255. Javier Vazquez was shelled through the first couple months, but he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his last six starts.

Dustin Moseley has been much more consistent than Javier Vazquez so far this year. While I hate to back a team as bad offensively as the Padres, I do think this is a very good value play on the underdog.
