MLB Pick: White Sox vs. Angels
Moneyline: Angels (-215) White Sox (+200)
Starting Pitchers: White Sox (Stewart) vs. Angels (Weaver)
The White Sox and the Angels are both fighting hard to keep their playoff hopes alive. The White Sox are 6.5 games behind the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers. The Angels are 3.5 games behind the Texas Ranges in the AL West. It is getting late in the season, and both of these teams know they need to make a run now. It will be a matchup of a young talented pitcher against a CY Young candidate on Wednesday night.
Zach Stewart started the season with the Blue Jays, but he has moved over to Chicago. The White Sox have used him some out of the bullpen, but he will get the start in this one. Stewart has a solid 3.74 ERA in his time in the major leagues this year. The White Sox have struggled mightily on offense this year. This is a lineup that seems like it should be putting up quite a few runs, but Chicago averages just 4.02 runs per game. Paul Konerko has been the rock solid contributor in the middle of the order all year long. Adam Dunn has had a ridiculously bad season. Alex Rios and Gordon Beckham are also severely underperforming compared to expectations. If the White Sox are going to make a run, the offense must start clicking.
Jered Weaver has been awesome this season. Weaver has a sparkling 2.10 ERA on the year. He has a dominating 1.49 ERA at home on the season. The Angels have gotten very good starting pitching this year. This is a team that has Weaver and Dan Haren at the top of the rotation, and Ervin Santana has come alive in a big way in the second half as well. The Angels have struggled to put runs on the board this year as well, but they have been a bit better of late. Peter Bourjos and Mark Trumbo are both youngsters who have been bright spots for this team. On the other hand, Vernon Wells and Bobby Abreu have had a disappointing year thus far.
The under is 8-0 in Weaver’s last 8 starts against the White Sox. Stewart has solid stuff and he should hold his own.
